PRAYING THROUGH THE BEATITUDES
Praying Through The Beatitudes
Search me, O God, and know my heart;
test me and know my anxious thoughts.
See if there is any offensive way in me,
and lead me in the way everlasting.
Psalm 139:23-24
The Beatitudes are not a list of new requirements for us to obey, but a profile of the heart attitudes that bring joy to God and blessing to us. As you read through the heart attitudes described by Jesus, ask Him to reveal those areas of your life where you are not living in alignment with His will and relying on Him.
Blessed are the poor in spirit . . .
Lord, do I recognize my total spiritual bankruptcy and my absolute need for You?
Blessed are those who mourn . . .
Lord, do I feel genuine sorrow for the sins I have committed and how my sins have grieved your Spirit and affected others?
Blessed are the meek . . .
Lord, am I motivated by my own pursuit and expression of power rather than seeking You and submitting to your leading and direction?
Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness . . .
Lord, is my desire to behold and express your righteousness greater than any other appetite or desire in my life?
Blessed are the merciful . . .
Lord, am I moved by your Holy Spirit to respond compassionately and unselfishly to the pain and distress of others?
Blessed are the pure in heart . . .
Lord, are my most private thoughts, words and actions motivated by a sincere desire to please You and authentically reflect your character to others?
Blessed are the peacemakers . . .
Lord, is my pursuit of peace and reconciliation motivated by an unselfish desire to honor You and love others, or by a selfish desire to avoid pain and protect myself?
Blessed are those who are persecuted . . .
Lord, does my passion for You and my desire to seek and express your righteousness move me to suffer and stand alone as your disciple?
